Julbo’s High Performance Zebra Lens — What is NXT® and Why You Should Care

A highly versatile lens, ideal for trailsports and snowsports, Julbo’s photochromic Zebra lens has developed a large fan base and it’s now available on a wide range of Julbo frames. But you may be wondering what makes it better and different from other photochromic lenses out there. Here is your optical lesson for the day…

The Zebra photochromic lens gives a broad range to adjust to the sun’s aggressiveness in different environments by adapting to varying light conditions from Category-2 (59-percent visible light) in low light conditions to Category-4 (95-percent visible light) in powerful light in as little as 22 seconds. Additionally, the Zebra lens has a lifelong anti-fog coating directly integrated via laser that guarantees maximum efficiency and long life.

Julbo’s Zebra lens is made from NXT®, which originally was developed for the U.S. Army in the 1990s to protect against bullets and to guarantee the finest optical quality. NXT is made from Trivex, which is the most effective synthetic material in the optics market, combining the advantages of mineral and organic materials. NXT is unbreakable, incredibly light, offers better transparency and is optically superior to other lens materials, especially when compared to polycarbonate. NXT is solvent resistant and is very high in definition compared to any polycarbonate lens, as well as, being caste into glass molds to ensure lower internal stress. NXT is found in Julbo’s most technical, photochromatic lenses including the Zebra, Camel, Octopus and the new Falcon lens. Click here to check out Julbo’s models available with the Zebra lens.
