Julbo Helps Organization Dedicated to Breast Cancer Prevention

October is Breast Cancer Prevention Month – a bit of a different spin than what you’ve probably heard about, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But a San Francisco-based organization known as the Breast Cancer Fund is striving to turn awareness into action by teaching others about the power of prevention.

The Breast Cancer Fund works to connect the dots between breast cancer and exposures to chemicals and radiation in our everyday environments. The mission of the group is to respond to the public health crisis of breast cancer by identifying – and advocating for elimination of – the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease.

TITLE

The Breast Cancer Fund holds some awesome fundraising events such as the “Peak Hike for Prevention” on Mt. Tamalpais in Marin, California, during which 387 hikers and 44 teams raised more than $188,000 through the day of the hike on October 2. (Fundraising is open through October 31, so they may still reach their goal of $250,000!)

TITLE

They also do an annual “Climb Against the Odds”, during which 40 climbers tackle 14,170-foot Mt. Shasta, all wearing eyewear provided by Julbo! The 2012 expedition is slated for June 17–23; submit an application to get in on the advocacy action. The team is fully supported by the Breast Cancer Fund in training, fundraising, and climbing. Past expeditions include Mt. Aconcagua, Argentina in 1995, Alaska’s Mt. McKinley in 1998, and Mt Fuji, Japan in 2000.

In the spirit of prevention, here are some simple but powerful tips for deterring breast cancer (as well as other diseases!):
• Use nontoxic cleaning products.
• Choose safer plastics that are BPA-free.
• Seek out cosmetics with non-toxic ingredients.
• Tell companies we want safe, non-toxic products.
• Tell elected officials we want smarter laws that protect our health.

Julbo sponsorship of National Ski Patrol kicks off in 2012

Ski patrol has got to be the toughest job one could have at a ski area. It requires physical stamina, long hours, and a lot of knowledge – all to keep us snow-sports enthusiasts safe on the hill.
As of January 2012, Julbo will be represented as a sponsor of the National Ski Patrol, NSP, a nonprofit organization that has dedicated itself to serving the public and outdoor recreation industry by providing education and credentialing to emergency care and safety services providers.
David Frick of NSP shares more about the organization that has been supporting and educating patrollers since 1938.

TITLE

What certifications does the NSP provide?

David: Ski patrol training requires intensive study and hands-on training of outdoor emergency care scenarios to gain experience with injured patients and the equipment necessary to treat them. Certification is given upon successful completion of all Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) course objectives. Typically, about 80 to 100 hours are devoted to becoming OEC-certified. Alpine patrollers, snowboard patrollers, and Nordic patrollers also demonstrate skiing proficiency and the ability to transport injured guests via toboggans in various snow conditions and types of terrain.

What are the benefits of NSP membership?
Members participate in annual continuing education to keep their skills sharp and can take advantage of many other programs to further their development, such as avalanche education [NSP is the oldest provider of avalanche education in the U.S.] and courses in backcountry search and rescue skills.

Members can shop the NSP Winter Catalog, packed with items related to patrolling and outdoor recreation that offer a substantial savings on retail pricing. They also have access to the NSP Pro Page, which lists a host of companies offering discounts on ALL their gear. Additionally, members receive Ski Patrol Magazine, packed with information of interest to patrollers.

What does the Julbo sponsorship entail?
NSP and Julbo have entered an agreement that will start on Jan. 1, 2012 and last through 2014. Julbo will support NSP through a sponsorship fee and will be represented as a Sponsor of NSP. There will be various ways of promoting Julbo product to our members, as well as direct sales opportunities through the NSP Pro Page.

What else can you tell us about the NSP that snow-sports enthusiasts may not be aware of?

Many people are unaware that such a large percentage of NSP members and Patrollers are completely volunteer. Also, many people don’t know that they can still be involved in NSP and provide aid to those who are injured, even if they have no skiing ability. Lastly, the National Ski Patrol received a federal charter from the U.S. Congress in 1980 to continue to promote safety and health in skiing and other outdoor recreational activities.

Diehards, Prep Your Gear: Early Season Just Around the Corner

Don’t forget the photochromatic goggles!

It’s just about time to break out your rock skis or rock board, because opening day is fast-approaching for certain U.S. ski areas. Colorado resorts Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are deep in the throes of the annual “Who opens first in the nation?” race.

Arapahoe Basin

Last year, however, the honor went to Sunday River in Maine: on October 22, 2010 at 3:30 EST, snow devotees who’d been waiting at the base of the Locke Mountain triple chair all day to feel that much-missed sliding sensation were contented.

Technically, this year’s honor goes to Mt. Hood’s Timberline Lodge, which opened on September 30 for a Friday-to-Sunday operation. Its glacial situation is certainly a boon for Northwest diehards!

Now it’s just a matter of snowmaking capacity and weather as to who will be next – will Coloradans or Mainers get their stoke on first? (Or maybe Vermonters? Killington could be it.)

Last season, Loveland got rolling on October 24, 2010, with Arapahoe Basin (just a short drive away) cranking up a chairlift the very next day. Considering that the Basin’s season went until July 4 of 2011, it likely wins the award for longevity. (Unless of course, you count places like Mt. Hood – which don’t close at all, really.)

Copper Mountain

No matter where you are getting your early season jones on, having a goggle lens that can adjust to varying light conditions is crucial, when spotting a protruding rock or branch can make the difference between hurting yourself too soon and simply loving you some early season turns.

Check out these styling Julbo goggles with the Zebra photochromatic lens: the Revolution, the Eclipse, and the Orbiter. In the meantime, keep it fun and safe out there!
